Industrial Revolution: Project
Task: Student groups will create projects about a variety of topics during the American Industrial Revolution. Each group of up to 3 students is responsible for completing 2 of the following project options. Each group will present at least 1 of their projects—to be determined by the teacher. Read carefully through the project options below and choose 2 to complete as a group with one exception. ***You cannot choose to do options 1 and 4…only one of them.
1. Pretend you are an employer looking to hire women and children to work in your factory. Create an advertisement (text and images) in the form of a poster that will entice them to work for you. Explain what is required of them: the hours, working conditions, housing, salary, location, etc. This information should be historically accurate and obtained through research. You will complete this project on small poster board supplied by me and will done by hand…no computer printouts. Below are links to websites that will provide information to help you on your way.

2. Lowell Mills-- Create the front page of a newspaper with 2 articles (150+ words each) about Lowell Mills and Mill Girls during the Industrial Revolution…must have title of newspaper, headings, images, captions, headlines, etc. When writing a newspaper article you must answer the Who, What, When, Where, and Why??? Below are links to websites that will provide ample information for you to turn into articles. This project will be completed in Microsoft Publisher.

3. Create a photo album about child labor using 5 photographs. Create a plausible, fictional story for each photo that is historically accurate. (100+ words per story---a big paragraph) Each book must have a front cover with a title. This option could be done by hand printing out pictures, etc. or as an eBook in Microsoft PowerPoint. Obviously, Google Images is probably the best place to get pictures using keywords related to child labor during the Industrial Revolution.
4. Cotton Gin (Eli Whitney)—Create an advertisement (text and images) in an attempt to sell the newly invented cotton gin. You need to include the specific function of the cotton gin and how it could improve production for farmers. How is the cotton gin different from previous methods of cleaning cotton? How does it improve production? How does it work? Who invented it? How much does it cost? Where can a consumer buy one? Why should a farmer buy a cotton gin? Who is selling it? Think about all the factors that go into selling a product. ***Also, in a paragraph on the back of the advertisement, explain how the cotton gin affected American society and defend the argument that the invention of the cotton gin was the primary cause of the Civil War. You will complete this project on small poster board supplied by me and will done by hand…no computer printouts. Use the links below to assist you in your research.

5. Research current child labor issues around the world. Create a Prezi detailing 5 child labor issues/topics in the world today. The Prezi should include a Title slide, Works Cited slide, 5 content slides, and 1 additional slide suggesting solutions to solving the child labor problem. Each content slide must include a minimum of 5 bullet points of information as well as relevant images. For each issue think about: Who, What, When, Where, and Why. For the “Solutions” slide think about ways governments and people around the world could go about ending child labor. Use the links below to assist you in your research.

Assessment: This is a 100 point project grade. You will have 4 class periods to complete the project so make the necessary arrangements to make sure it gets done.
***Note--All group members are responsible for all phases of the project. In other words, all group members will get the same grade unless there are extenuating circumstances. Therefore, make sure your group is collaborating to its potential and that all members are working toward the desired end result.
