1. Vocabulary Terms

Children's Book As immigrants, you and your partner will research the nationality of a person coming to America during the late 1800s. You will create a children's book telling about your life in the Old World, your journey to the New World, your life in the New World, and your dreams for your new life. Requirements: -Create eBook in PowerPoint - Minimum 9 slides including Cover Slide and Works Cited - Text and Images on each page - Create a narrative that illustrates the life of immigrants -You must include a minimum of 10 historical facts from the time period in your story that relate to immigration and urbanization. Organization/Questions to Consider for Children's Book Life in the Old World What country are you emigrating from? Why are you emigrating… reasons: political, economic, social, religious, war? Dreams for a new life? What do you want to achieve in the US? What kind of opportunities does the US provide? Journey to the New World Boat ride? Ellis or Angel Island? Quarantine? Reality of Life in the New World Slums? Disease? Job? Family? Social Life? Opportunity? Religion? Are you glad you made the voyage? Yes or no and why. 3. RAFTs Assignment Each group member will write a RAFTs assignment about an aspect of urbanization and reform in late 1800s. Choose the row you would like to write about using the assigned role, audience, format, and topic. Identify the row you chose for your R.A.F.T. on the top of your paper. Each person needs to analyze 2 political cartoons and complete 1 political cartoons of their own related to immigration and urbanization. Students will conduct an interview with a a family member, friend, or simply someone in the community who immigrated to this country. Students must ask the following questions to get a complete picture of the persons' experience. Where did they emigrate from? Why did they leave their country? How was the trip to the United States? What was their experience at Ellis Island? How did they settle in to their new life? What does the US offer that was lacking in their home country? What do they dislike about the US in comparison to their home country? Are they happy overall with their decision to immigrate to the United States? Why? |
